The Henry family, set out on the ultimate sailing adventure. They set sail on July, 2009 aboard a 1978 Morris Leigh 30- foot sailboat, named Hook. Kirsten and Steve, (highschool sweethearts), wanted to give their two daughters, Emma, 9, and Maddie, 6, a better-than-books education, as they traveled from Maine to Florida and beyond. One year turned into two and they are still at sea. Steve said, "you don't need a crystal ball to know that kids grow up fast. by going on this trip, I knew I'd never regret not spending enough time with them." Steve has been sailing since he was a teenager. They had bought the boat in 2005 and had been fixing it up for this journey. Kirsten was working as a physical therapist and Steve was a boatyard manager. The safety of the girls was their first priority. They stayed close to the shoreline and anchored every night near shore, to explore the local town, whenever possible. They have seen a lot of towns that they like and both parents home school the girls. After the girls go to bed, Kirsten and Steve have parents "quiet time," while relaxing, updating their blog, reading, playing guitar, or knitting. "We believe that learning to live and work together is conducive to a long happy life together," Steve says. |
